FInal Project (General Prologue)

Spring was blooming all around
the Sun was hotly beaming down
beneath a patch of melting white frost
began to peak some lovely green moss
the rickety carriage bustled and shook
as two young women passed a brook
the wheels turned underneath the ground
as did the season creeping up without a sound
the anxious birds fluttered two and fro
as a busy bee buzzed up against the window
the lazy clouds passed slowly by
and Catherine Moorland yawned with a sigh.
These were two strangers met by chance
from sharing a familiar acquaintance.
Ms. Moorland glanced at the strange girl across
and she looked somewhat at a loss
the ivory dress of Miranda shone
which met a reflection upon Catherine’s birthstone
.
This necklace was her only femininity
as Miranda judged her with such proximity.
The Sun peacefully sailed overhead
as the night approached slowly like lead
and so these young women were off to London
a city foreign to these girls from Devon.
CATHERINE Moorland was a heroine of sorts
Not particularly beautiful, and teased for her warts.
A peculiar childhood, spent mostly with her nose in a book.
But studying the surrounding social politics- she often mistook.
Her family was the modest of kin indeed,
Their warmth had consoled her, if ever in need.

Since we started off these blogs with a walk, I would like to finish it with one, too.
Today I took a walk. These days I don’t like to walk much anywhere, mostly because it just takes too damn long to get places. Our campus is like a straight-up obstacle course. Ice here, slush there; and there’s almost ALWAYS a pile of dirty snow right on the path I need to take. It’s funny, because I read the blog I wrote in September about a walk I had taken. It talks about how beautiful Boulder is, and how summer is gone. I remember psyching myself out to get ready for Winter, too. I used to tell myself “it’s going to be cold soon, appreciate this while it lasts.” The fact that I even took the effort to realize that really made a difference this year in how prepared I was for Winter. Freshman year, Winter came up way too fast, and I never got to really appreciate the fall season. This year, I took pictures. Tons of pictures. I went on walks all around Boulder; all around campus. I actually got to see the seasons changing this year and appreciate it. Now, there’s been snow on the ground for a good 2 weeks. I miss seeing grass. I know that most of the plants are dead, which is fine… but atleast give me some grass to get my daily dose of greenery. Anyways.. I went on a walk today. This walk wasn’t necessarily for pleasure, because I was walking to work. All I could think about is how tired I am of the color white. I wish this snow would melt so I don’t feel like I live in a freezer. I guess this Winter Break is just in the nick of time. When it’s snowing here, I’ll be in California- another sunny day in Californ-i-a.

I was going through all of the books that we’ve read (that I still have copies of), and most of them are pretty flagged up with post its. I found this quote highlighted and underlined.

“The airy schemes he (Ferdinand) once formed of future felicity, resulting from the union of two persons so justly dear to him- with gay visions of past happiness- floated upon his fancy, and the lustre they reflected served only to heighten, by contrast, the obscurity and gloom of his present views” (p96).

This quote is so relatable. It’s talking about how something that was once dear to you, your world, can be something that you will languish over in the future. In Ferdinand’s case, he’s mourning over his dear friend Hippolitus, and worried sick about his sister Julia, as she was in love with Hippolitus.

I know ‘they’ say “don’t judge a book by it’s cover” but I really do. It’s sad, but it’s true. I feel like we all do at one point or another. Maybe that’s why I detested Waverly so much, my book was just plain green. No picture. No nothing. Not cool. Out of all of the covers of the books that we have read, my favorite cover is Northanger Abbey. My version of the book has a very old building on the cover. It looks dark and mysterious, which is understandable considering it’s a Gothic Novel. This struck my curiosity to google “gothic architecture.” The pictures that popped up are SO intense. The architecture. Oh my goodness. I’m overwhelmed. How would you even build something like that? How long would it take?

So much detail is put into these buildings. America doesn’t have many buildings like this, which is kind of sad. I wish we had more, but at least it makes traveling to see these beautiful buildings so much more exciting. I researched gothic architecture a little bit more, and found that these buildings were built with the purpose of appealing to the emotions. It’s meant to overwhelm. Which makes sense why so many Gothic buildings are often cathedrals, churches, or castles.

It turns out there are worse circumstances than having 3 finals on one day, a paper, 2 presentations, and 2 following finals all due within the next 6 days. How could it be worse? By coincedentally growing deathly ill the week prior to all of this. So here are my apologies for missing the last day of class. I just wanted to let who ever is reading this know that it was for the best- as the chances are high that you would have grown deathly ill by Saturday- leaving you with no choice but to study for finals with a massive head-ache from coughing up green goop from the moment you woke up until the second you finally find sleep. So there is my gift to you, my friend- I gave you the gift of good health during finals. I know, I know… You’re very welcome. It was a big sacrafice. And my apologies to Kirstyn as well… I really enjoyed your class, and your style of teaching. You never failed to entertain me by laughing at your own jokes, while making a particularly dull subject have relate-able connections to us as students.

When brainstorming how my group (Elizabeth A. and I) would carry out the final project, we figured that we wanted to relate the writing style to one of the pieces that we’ve read this semester. The first piece of literature that came to our mind was The Canterbury Tales minus the Middle English (for obvious reasons). The fact that the class had read The Canterbury Tales at the beginning of the semester (without having any other piece of work to compare it to) made it hard to find appreciation, especially because it was written in Middle English. Looking back at it now, The Canterbury Tales wrap up the idea of the Romantic Era. It included travel, along with nature, and is framed with the art of story-telling by different characters. This style of writing gave the audience a break every once in awhile by starting a whole new mini-story inside of the main story (of travel). It was definitely a perfect piece of literature to start off this course! Although, I wish I would have appreciated it more when we were reading it as a class.

Let me just start by saying that Equiano was REFRESHING after reading Waverly. To me, Waverly was so unbelievably dull. I just couldn’t find a way to relate to the text and the characters. The writing style was a lot different, as well. In Equiano, it’s more a matter-of-fact style of writing. The one thing I enjoyed about reading Equiano is the amount of information that is fed to the reader. It got a bit overwhelming at times, and there were several nights where I kept having to reread paragraphs just to make sure I didn’t miss anything. I highlighted any new name that was introduced (which happened about every other page). One thing that I wish Equiano would have described in more depth is the experiences that he encountered as a slave. (Like Jeff had brought up in one of his blogs). The one thing that I find most interesting when it comes to history is terror. It’s like peeling yourself away from the TV while watching Jaws. You know what’s going to happen, but the terror draws you in. I feel like if Equiano described the vessels in more detail, it would have been more compelling.
One reason why I think he didn’t want to go into more depth of his experiences with witnessing horrible things- might be the fact that it was just too haunting. Maybe his brain even forgot these malicious experiences, because the brain acts to protect it’s host from unnecessary pain. Nobody really knows why he chose to exclude a lot of details, but I’m sure he did it for his own good. Maybe he didn’t want to be a charity case, or maybe he simply just didn’t want to re-open the door to hell.

Out of all of the books that we read this year, my favorite one was probably Northanger Abbey. I particularly liked the amount of dialogue and drama going on between different relationships. Even though this story took place during the gothic era, the fact that there are different elements that tie these relationships together make it easier to relate to- which in turn, makes the novel easier to read. I found myself unable to put it down at times, which I cannot say about any of the other novels we read this semester. I particularly liked Catherine’s character, because she is described as an heroine- yet her personality doesn’t jump off of the page to the reader. The narrator’s satirical sense of humor towards Catherine definitely helped move the pages along when reading this novel. Catherine is described as a heroine in training- which is silly, because you are who you are. She’s described as not-so-smart, not extraordinarily beautiful, and very socially naive. The combination of these characteristics wouldn’t normally fit the role of a hero, but Jane Austen wrote Catherine’s character exceptionally well by creating different layers in Catherine in which everybody can relate to at one point in another throughout the novel.

In the beginning of the year, I thought it would be so easy to do just 2 blogs a week. Turns out, it’s not. I can definitely say that this semester has been the fastest one for me by far. September seems like it was yesterday. I remember our first blog, having to write about taking a walk. Back in the day when it was enjoyable to walk outside. Oh, I miss seeing plants alive and kickin’. I can understand why there is an era in literature purely dedicated to traveling and nature. If I could, I would want to live in the romantic era, where the picturesque is vastly appreciated. I would want to meet all of these great authors, and let them know how important they still are in our world today. The art that they left behind gives the world a glimpse of a more simple, beautiful time period- where nature and natural-born things are highly significant. I wish they could kick some sense into the world’s present attitude towards nature, so we can preserve the beauty we have left instead of creating more buildings, more products, and more problems.

Caleb Williams

Right or wrong: is it absolute? Or based on circumstances?
(Caleb’s letter to Fawkland) “I sincerely ask for forgiveness on the many errors on my count..”

Servitude in general is brought up a lot. Why do you think this is?
“I recollected the confinement I had undergone and the fate that had impended over me with horror. Never did man feel more vividly than I felt at that moment the sweets of liberty. Never did man more strenuously prefer poverty with independence to the artificial allurements of a life of slavery” (203).

Murder is a popular topic. The old woman is trying to kill Caleb? (expand)
“I heard the steps of the murderer as he cautiously approached. I seemed to listen to his constrained, yet audible breathings. He came up to the corner where I was placed, and then stopped. The idea became too terrible, I started, opened my eyes, and beheld the execrable hag before mentioned standing over me with a butcher’s hatchet” (224).
